FACE OF GRACE

On August 27, 1910 Agnes Gonxha Bujathiu was born in Skopje, Yugoslavia. In 1928 she went to Calcutta to teach in a Catholic School where she was known as Mother Teresa. While teaching in the school and serving in the convent God gave her a heart to serve the poorest of the poor. Walking through the slums of Calcutta Mother Teresa touched the hearts of those who suffered. In so doing she put a face on the God she served.

In 1950 the “Missionaries of Charity” became recognized as an Order and ministry of the church. The Order was funded by free will donations of people who believed in the work and heart of Mother Teresa. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

"I choose the poverty of our poor people. But I am grateful to receive (the Nobel) in the name of the hungry, the naked, the homeless, of the crippled, of the blind, of the lepers, of all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared-for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone."

While the Order was initiated to serve in Calcutta, The Missionaries Of Charity would eventually serve much of the world. Hearing the voice of God, she acted on belief, stepped out in faith and the potential of God was released in her life. When I look upon the life of Mother Teresa I see a servant of God, who loved those who suffered, regardless of their religious label. This too is a reflection of Grace.
